Baby diaper rash: Identification, prevention and healing

Almost every baby sometimes has to deal with diaper rashes. Although it is fortunately not harmful, it can be very annoying for your little one. Curious about how diaper rash develops and what you can do to remedy it quickly? In this article, we will explain it to you and give you useful tips to soften those red buttocks as quickly as possible.

What is diaper rash?

Diaper rash – also called diaper eczema – causes red, irritated skin on your baby’s buttocks and thighs. The skin may feel dry and chapped and in some cases blisters or small wounds develop. Although diaper rash is fortunately not dangerous or contagious, it is a source of unpleasantness for your little one. It often causes pain, irritation and sometimes even sleepless nights.

What does diaper rash look like?

Diaper rash is identifiable by the typical red, irritated buttocks of your baby. The skin can look painful and chapped, sometimes with flakes, small sheets, blisters or even wounds. At first, the rash may look wet, but over time, the skin becomes drier and more susceptible to infection. This sometimes makes the rash worse due to fungi or bacteria. The rash is usually in the diaper area, but can also spread to the thighs or lower back.

Diaper rash or a fungal infection?

Sensitive skin is especially susceptible to fungal infections. This occurs regularly and it is important to check whether your baby only suffers from diaper rashes or whether your baby has also contracted a fungal infection. A fungal infection shows small, red spots that form around the diaper rash. These spots often have a flaking edge, which makes it look like a new rash is developing around the existing diaper rash. If you notice that your baby is suffering from diaper rash with fungus, a cream with an antimyotic – possibly in combination with zinc oxide – can provide relief.

How does diaper rash develop?

Diaper rash is often caused by wearing a full diaper, where heat and moisture irritate your baby’s skin. Several factors increase the risk of diaper rash. These may include:

  • Failure to clean the skin under the diaper properly
  • Failure to change the diapers often enough
  • Diarrhea
  • A course of antibiotics
  • Sensitive skin (for example, due to eczema)

It is also sometimes thought that teething plays a role in diaper rashes. However, this has not been scientifically proven.

What can I do for my little one?

There are several things you can do to soften your baby’s skin and keep him or her comfortable.

Prevention
Prevent diaper rashes by:

  • Changing wet or dirty diapers right away
  • Cleaning the diaper area thoroughly and allowing it to dry for a while
  • Applying a thin layer of cream or petroleum jelly on your baby’s buttocks
  • Not fastening the diaper too tightly (this allows air to circulate)
  • Using extra-absorbent diapers if necessary

Treatment
Does your baby still suffer from diaper rashes?

  • Then change the diaper frequently and ensure that the skin is dry
  • Occasionally leave your child without a diaper (this allows the skin to breathe)
  • Cleanse the skin thoroughly and apply a thick layer of zinc ointment or petroleum jelly

These tips didn’t help? Then consider another brand of diapers or detergent. If the rash doesn’t go away or gets worse, contact your doctor.
