Baby skin care in winter: Tips and advice

Winter is a lovely time of the year, but it can present some challenges for your baby’s skin. Cold winds, dry air due to heating, for example, and dramatic temperature changes can dry out or irritate a baby’s sensitive skin. What is the best way to take care of your baby’s skin in winter? We have compiled some useful tips and advice for you!

Moisturize your baby's skin in winter

Your baby’s skin is thinner than that of adults and therefore more sensitive. It dries out faster and deserves some extra attention. It is important to moisturize your baby’s skin by, for example, applying a gentle baby cream or lotion after bathing.

This helps to strengthen the skin’s natural moisture barrier and keep the skin supple. Make sure that the cream or lotion does not contain perfume or alcohol, as this causes the skin to dry out faster.

Don’t forget to give your own skin extra attention, too! When taking care of your baby, you will wash and disinfect your hands regularly, which will cause your skin to dry out faster. Therefore, after taking care of your baby, treat your hands with a moisturizing hand cream to keep the skin nice and soft and supple.

Use lukewarm water and do not bathe or shower your baby too often

While a warm bath may feel great on a cold day, it’s best not to use water that’s too warm or hot. Water that is too hot will also dry out your baby’s skin. Preferably use lukewarm water and limit bathing to about 5-10 minutes. Add a little baby oil to the bathwater for a bit of extra skincare. Limit the number of baths to a maximum of 2 to 3 times a week so as not to dry out your baby’s skin too much.

Humidify your indoor air

Heating systems can dry out the air and this in turn affects your baby’s skin. Use a humidifier if you notice that your child suffers from dry skin. Place it in the baby’s room as this will prevent your baby’s skin from drying out while sleeping.

Is winter sun bad for the skin?

You may not think about it, but during a cold winter, the sun’s rays can sometimes cause more damage than on a beautiful summer day! Even on a cloudy day, snow causes more than 80% of the sun’s rays to be reflected. So protect your baby’s fragile skin even in winter with sunscreen products. And always dress your child appropriately when you go outside. You can use a baby-friendly balm for your baby’s cheeks and lips as protection against the cold wind.

Watch out for eczema in your baby in winter

Winter can exacerbate skin problems such as eczema. If you notice that your baby is suffering from scaly red skin that won’t go away, see a doctor. If necessary, use an ointment, prescribed by your doctor, to alleviate irritation and itching.
