Leap 2: The time for rolling has arrived

We experienced Noèl’s first leap as quite intense. Now that we had arrived at the second leap, we were prepared for heavy days and cluster feeds. None of that happened.

Noèl seems to enjoy mastering his new skills. He laughs more and more every day and enjoys everything that happens around him. Recently, he has been able to focus on the TV and then laughs at the colors and the high voices (we think). Even when we grab his feet, he is radiating with joy!

Less appetite

Halfway through the second leap, I noticed a decline in Noèl’s appetite. Because he is quickly distracted now that he hears and sees more, he eats less. In The Wonder Weeks app, I read this was a common occurrence, so I don’t worry too much about it. However, I make sure that his last feeding before sleeping is in a dark, quiet room. Under these circumstances, he drinks up all the milk in his bottle and he has taken in enough to get through the night.

Because he has now learned to make contact with us, he keeps laughing while drinking. It’s super cute but not very practical, haha!

Discovering new skills

Noèl has also completely discovered his voice and tries to mimic our sounds. We dare not believe it because he is still so small, but he keeps saying “okay”. When we repeat it, he laughs broadly and says it again!

We raise Noèl in three languages, his father has more conversations with him than I do, and I notice that in the sounds Noèl makes. Noèl’s father is Italian and he speaks in a higher intonation and he often imitates this. We also speak English at home, and Dutch is actually the language he hears least of all. I think he’ll be fine when he goes to school.

From a motor point of view, Noèl is quite adept, he likes to grab things (and not let go of them again). He’s already holding his head up well. He follows my voice at all times.

Although Noèl is very cheerful during this leap, I do notice that he likes to be close to me. He is not prone to crying very much but he has a strong urge to be close to me.

Calm down!

The scheduled skills included rolling from side to stomach and rolling from side to back. When I read this, I thought by myself that he wouldn’t be able to do that yet for a long time, would he?! But apparently he can. When I hold a toy in front of his face, he follows it and turns along.

In the sleeping box, he always turns on his stomach and then falls asleep. Very cute, but not so good for my peace of mind because I am now standing next to the sleeping box for half a day to see if he is still breathing properly.

The Newborn phase is officially over and our little darling is growing fast! I can have little conversations with him, and he tries to hold his bottle by himself. When he’s had enough to drink, he pushes it away as well. When I give his pacifier, he grabs my hand for comfort.

Where did my baby go…

Noèl is now 11 weeks old and according to the app leap 3 is due to start already in 9 days.

We are definitely ready for it!

Love,
Kimberley Mac-Intosch
