Synesthesia: a baby’s senses are all mixed up

Your baby’s senses are continually developing. They can hear and feel better than before. And yet, your baby still does not do that in the same way we do.

An unborn baby is actually a ‘synesthete’: which means they possess and have developed all five senses but they do not function independently.

So your baby smells what they taste, sees what they feel and hears what they see. It is almost impossible for us to imagine.

Compare it to soup. With every taste, a master chef knows what is in the soup. We can hazard a guess at a few of the ingredients, but we experience the soup more as a whole. We like or dislike the soup.
