This option is becoming more readily available in more and more states in the USA. Thus, it is certainly possible to give birth at home. We will gladly give you some tips!
A home birth: an option for you?
For centuries, of course, giving birth at home has been the norm. In modern times, however, deliveries mainly take place in the hospital. Now that we know more and more about anatomy, technology and how childbirth works, more and more women want to give birth at home again. Of course, under the guidance of, for example, an obstetrician. Would you like to find out whether giving birth at home is something for you? You can give birth at home if:
- You are having a healthy, low-risk pregnancy
- You do not want or require a cesarean section, an epidural or cutting
- You would like your friends and family to be present during delivery
- You want to walk around freely and shower, eat or drink without restrictions during your delivery
- You think it will be a great experience to give birth in your own comfortable and familiar environment
When is it not possible to give birth at home?
It might sound good to you, giving birth in your own safe environment. But there are certain situations, where it is not possible to give birth at home. For example, when there is a substantial risk of complications for mother and/or baby, such as in the following situations:
- You have diabetes
- You have high blood pressure or pregnancy poisoning
- You have previously had an early birth or are now at greater risk of another preterm birth
Always consult with your partner about what he or she feels comfortable with. Although you are the one who has to give birth, you both need to feel comfortable with a home birth. Always have a thorough conversation about this!
The benefits of giving birth at home
There are several reasons to opt for a home birth. Of course, every woman has her own reasons for doing so, but there are several advantages that are pleasant for every woman:
- It reduces the cost of delivery. On average, an uncomplicated vaginal delivery costs 60% less than at the hospital.
- You can breastfeed immediately after birth and have skin-to-skin contact, which is good for you and your baby
- You have your loved ones close by. Your partner, but also your children, other family members or friends; everyone is allowed to be there. At the hospital, that’s often not the case.
- You are in a familiar, pleasant environment. Some women say that this alleviates stress!
A home birth with your obstetrician
You don’t give birth at home alone with your partner. An obstetrician will supervise the entire delivery. In addition, you can also choose a birth coach, an experienced woman who mentally supports you during childbirth. She is not medically skilled; however, an obstetrician is and is therefore also allowed to make medical decisions. In addition, she will also provide all necessary things during childbirth, such as oxygen, an IV, gloves, a hat for the baby, waterproof covers for the bed and certain medications.
Going to the hospital after all?
It happens quite often that a woman has to go to the hospital during a home birth. Research shows that 40% of women who give birth for the first time have to go to the hospital, and 10% of women who have given birth before. There are several reasons why women end up going to the hospital, including:
- You are overtired and no longer have the strength to continue
- You need to be stitched up
- You have high blood pressure
- Childbirth is not progressing as expected
- There is an issue with your baby
- The umbilical cord arrives earlier than the baby
- Heavy bleeding
It is therefore smart to always have a hospital bag ready, even if you are planning a home birth. Also make sure you have transportation to the hospital and, for example, a babysitter for your children. This means that in an emergency, you can get to the hospital for help as quickly as possible.
