Fingers caught in a door

Ouch! The fingers of your little darling have been caught between the door and the door jamb. Here’s what to do if your child has a crushed finger, nail injury, or severed fingertip after trapping their hand between a door and door jamb.

Bruised finger (no open wound, or only a minor wound)

  • Cool with cold water (five minutes).
  • Apply Arnica or Calendula on the wound, provided there is no open wound.
  • For small wounds, disinfect with non-caustic disinfectant and bandage the wound.

Crushed finger (large wound)

  • Cool with a bag of ice cubes or a cold compress.
  • Call a doctor immediately (with small children you can always see a doctor right away).
  • Get someone to ride with you. It is very dangerous to drive with a panicking child in the back seat.

Nail injury

  • Very painful. Indicated by a red spot that gradually turns black.
  • Protect the nail with a plaster or bandage (this prevents the nail from coming loose and will prevent the nail from falling off completely).
  • In the event of a thickening blood blister under the nail, go to the doctor as quickly as possible, but in any case, within two hours.
  • The doctor can drain the blood blister with a sterile needle (don’t try to do it yourself!).
  • The pressure is now off the nail and that will significantly relieve the pain.

Severed fingertip

  • If your child suffers such a wound as a result of having his/her finger trapped in a door, your child may faint.
  • Put your child down and reassure him/her. Keep talking and see if the child continues to respond. Crying is a good thing in this case because it is a reaction.
  • Hold the finger up high to reduce bleeding.
  • In the event of heavy bleeding, try to stem the bleeding by pressing hard and firmly on both sides of the finger. Do not touch the wound with your fingers.
  • Quickly and temporarily apply a sterile dressing (gauze, if you have, but be quick about it because in the hospital they take it off anyway).
  • Go straight to the nearest hospital’s emergency room.
  • Whenever possible, take the fingertip with you. Place it in a plastic bag and put this plastic bag in another bag with ice.

Getting your finger caught in a door is extremely painful, so remember: prevention is better than cure!
