The world of categories

Leap 6

From week 33, the world of categories will be knocking at your door, leap 6. The first signals of leap 6 will appear during weeks 33 to 38. Once your baby can perceive “categories”, they will realize that they can divide the world into groups. They can understand that certain things look very similar. Learn everything you need to know about leap 6 in The Wonder Weeks app.

The fussy phase of leap 6

The fussy phase of leap 6

You will be able to recognize the fussy phase of leap 6 by the fact that your baby cries more, is clingier and crankier than normal. And with this leap as well, you will notice that many babies refuse to have their diaper changed or won’t lie still when their diaper is being changed. And eating… that could become a battlefield. For most babies, this fussy phase of leap 6 lasts four weeks but it could last anywhere from three to six weeks. Did you know that all you have to do is fill in the due date in our app and you will receive a notification when the fussy phase of the leap begins?

The skills phase of leap 6

The skills phase of leap 6

From week 37, you will be able to discover your baby’s first new skills. Whereas during the last leap, your baby discovered “relationships” between the things they encountered in their world, now they will understand that they can divide their world into groups! Your baby will learn that a dog is not a horse, that a black and white spotted cat is not a cow and that their parents can also be angry, sad, or happy.

The skills of leap 6

The discovery of categories in leap 6

In leap 6, your baby will start to perceive categories. For example, that they look the same, make the same sound, taste, smell or feel the same. In short, they discover that various things have the same characteristics and therefore belong to the same category. A whole new world!

Leap 6: practicing and experimenting

As soon as your baby gets the new skill of perceiving and making categories, they will be occupied with practicing and experimenting. You will notice that your baby will start studying people, animals, and objects in a certain way. They are busy looking, comparing and sorting things based on similarities and will put them in the category they made up.

TIP: let your baby play with heavy and light objects, let them feel different materials and various shapes. Let your baby explore the various parts of things or let him play with the concepts of “high” and “low”, “big” and “small”. Our app even contains more games that will help you stimulate the leaps. Have your found them already?

No baby is the same: they develop in their own way

Remember that no baby is the same. Some babies will primarily show their physical abilities during a leap and others will demonstrate their progress in speech and language skills. Every baby develops at their own pace and chooses what they want to focus on. You can keep a personal record of your baby’s skills and progress in our app so you can look back at them later on.

Baby leap chart

During our research into mental leaps, we discovered that this phase in which your baby cries more frequently and shows a different behavior than normally, can actually be predicted quite accurately almost up to the very week based on the due date. Discover the leaps of your baby on our website, using our baby leap chart.
